Aviation Crashes and Related Incidents 1945

04/01/1945 0025 hours Handley Page Halifax W7928 of 1669 Heavy Conversion Unit based at RAF Bottesford stalled possibly due to icing while on a navigation exercise. Six members of the crew bailed out and were lost. The pilot managed to make an emergency landing in Cornwall. See 07/01/1945.

07/01/1945 1400 hours the body of 1818890 F/Sgt A.E.W. James was washed ashore at Porthmisson Beach, Trevone Bay, Padstow. F/Sgt James has been identified as a one of the crew of a Handley Page Halifax who baled out off the North Cornish Coast during the night of 4th January.

14/01/1945 1445 hours Hawker Hurricane from RAF Portreath crashed into the sea 5 miles NW of St. Merryn Police Station, the pilot is missing.

14/01/1945 Hawker Tempest Mark V NV649 of 222 Squadron based at RAF Predannack crashed into the sea 25 miles S of the Lizard. The pilot F/Lt R.J. Floyd is missing presumed dead.

17/01/1945 1705 hours an Airspeed Oxford Mark II T1338 of the Station Flight RAF Elsham Wolds, Lincolnshire suffered a loss of power and had the undercarriage jam in the up position before belly landing at St. Mary’s Airport, Isles of Scilly. The aircraft was damaged but the crew of three are safe.

21/01/1945 de Havilland Mosquito NF Mark XIX TA439 of 1 Overseas Aircraft Dispatch Unit crashed into the sea SW of the Isles of Scilly from 1500 feet, possibly due to icing or anoxia due to failure of the oxygen system.

22/01/1945 Douglas C-47B 43-49525 crashed 2 miles from St. Mawgan Airfield. U.S. Air Transport Command.

29/01/1945 P-51D 44-14769 crashed 16 miles W of RAF Exeter. U.S. 359th Fighter Group.(Pilot Garland E. Madison).

13/02/1945 1145 hours a Hawker Tempest Mark V NV648 of 222 Squadron based at RAF Predannack suffered engine failure and the pilot F/Lt R.P. Dashwood bailed out SW of Constantine. The aircraft crashed and was wrecked at Goonreath Farm, Gweek 2 miles S of Constantine Police Station.

21/02/1945 0545 hours Short Sunderland Mark III ML770 of 228 Squadron based at Pembroke Dock, Wales was taxing back to the flare path at St. Mary’s, Isles of Scilly after an A/S patrol when it struck a rock and was damaged.

24/02/1945 1050 hours Douglas C-47A-75-DL Skytrain 42-100976 S2-T of the 314th Troop Carrier Group 32nd Troop Carrier Squadron based at Saltby, Nottinghamshire crashed at St. Mary’s Airport, Isles of Scilly. The aircraft was extensively damaged but the crewmen are safe.

24/02/1945 1050 hours Douglas C-47A-75-DL Skytrain 42-100976 S2-T of the 314th Troop Carrier Group 32nd Troop Carrier Squadron based at Saltby, Nottinghamshire crashed at St. Mary’s Airport, Isles of Scilly. The aircraft was extensively damaged but the crewmen are safe.

05/03/1945 1100 hours Hawker Henley TT Mark III L3330 of 639 Squadron based at RAF Cleave crashed at Eastway Farm, Kilkhampton 3 miles W of Kilkhampton Police Station. The aircraft was completely smashed and one of the two crew is injured.

20/03/1945 1941 hours Vickers Warwick GR Mark V PN762 of 179 Squadron RAF St. Eval crashed at Bungalow Gardens, Carnanton, St. Mawgan. The aircraft was completely smashed and burnt out, one crewman is injured.

31/03/1945 0950 hours de Havilland Mosquito NF Mark XIX TA226 of No.1 Overseas Aircraft Dispatch Unit based at RAF Portreath crashed just after take off at Copperhill Farm, 1¼ miles S of Redruth Police Station. The crew of two were killed.

12/04/1945 de Havilland Mosquito B Mark XXV KB564 of No.1 Overseas Aircraft Dispatch Unit RAF Portreath suffered excessive oil temperature in the starboard engine and the pilot feathered the propeller. The aircraft overshot while landing on the port engine, and crashed in a field SW of the aerodrome.

16/04/1945 1503 hours Miles Master Mark II W9064 of 736 Squadron based at RNAS St. Merryn force landed at Carnevas Farm, St. Merryn. The aircraft was slightly damaged of the two crewmen one is injured.

19/04/1945 0005 hours Vickers Wellington Mark XIV NC419 CX-? Of 14 Squadron based at RAF Chivenor Devon flown by F/Lt Hogg RCAF and crew suffered an internal petrol leak and while making for an emergency landing at RAF St. Eval, were overcome by fumes and crashed into the cliff face at Trenance, Mawgan Porth, St. Mawgan. The crew of six have been killed.

21/04/1945 1103 hours Consolidated Liberator flying from West to East dropped a bomb which penetrated the lawn of Bude Coastguard Station and exploded about 20 yards from houses. The Royal Air Force have been informed, who describe the object as a passage bomb used to obtain wind directions when over the sea.

27/04/1945 2035 hours Short Sunderland Mark V RN283 of 228 Squadron based at Pembroke Dock, Wales while on A/S patrol dropped a depth charge at 50 feet. The explosion blew the tail unit off and the aircraft crashed into the St. Georges Channel at 52 degrees 22 minutes North, 05 degrees 50 minutes West. The aircraft was destroyed and of the crew three were killed and four are missing.

08/06/1945 0010 hours de Havilland Mosquito NF Mark XXX NT473 of 151 Squadron based at RAF Predannack was returning to base on one engine. When the pilot mistook the form of a harbour for base reduced height and crashed into the ground in line with the runway 1½ miles from the airfield at Trenoon Farm, Grade Ruan 2 miles E of Mullion Police Station. The aircraft was burnt out and the crew of two were killed.

29/06/1945 1042 hours Supermarine Seafire LIII NF442 of 736 Squadron based at RNAS St. Merryn crashed at Colbiggan Farm, 2½ miles NE of Roche Police Station. The pilot was killed.

10/07/1945 1300 hours the body of an Australian airman Aus/432543 W/O Ivan Leslie Baker from RAF St. Eval has been recovered from the sea off Trevose Head, St. Merryn.

13/07/1945 A glider target No 1628, 25 feet in length crashed in a field at Halgabron Farm, Tintagel. The glider broke away from the towing

04/08/1945 An Airspeed Oxford PH357 of 1529 Flight had a propeller break on take off from RAF St. Mawgan, the aircraft crash landed but was damaged beyond repair.

09/08/1945 1655 hours de Havilland Mosquito NF Mark XXX MM745/G HU-A of 406 Squadron RCAF RAF Predannack overshot the airfield crashed and exploded at Chyvarloe Farm, Gunwalloe, Helston 2¾ miles SW of Helston Police Station. The aircraft was completely burnt out of the two crew one is seriously injured the other killed.

23/08/1945 de Havilland Mosquito FB Mark VI of 248 Squadron based at Chivenor, Devon crashed into the sea killing 128359 F/Lt John Frederick Green DFC and 145850 F/Lt George Brown Forrest DFC.

31/08/1945 1140 hours Chance-Vought Corsair JS498 of 748 Squadron from RNAS St. Merryn crashed into the sea 3 miles NW of Kilkhampton. The aircraft sank and the pilot killed.

31/08/1945 An Airspeed Oxford PH358 of 1529 Flight ditched 12 miles W of Trevose Head after an engine fell off in flight.

14/09/1945 0855 hours Handley Page Halifax Mark A VII PN305 9U-W of 644 Squadron based at Tarrant Rushton, Dorset crashed at Priddacombe, Bolventnor. The aircraft was completely wrecked and all 21 on board killed.

01/10/1945 de Havilland Mosquito NF Mark XXX NT489 of 151 Squadron swung on take off from RAF Predannack, hit a blister hangar and damaged Mosquito NF Mark XXX NT306 of the same squadron.

19/11/1945 Vickers Wellington Mark X of 3 Flying Unit overshot on landing at RAF Perranporth and the undercarriage was raised to stop.
